(Julia marches with the Friendswood High School band, front row center position, in the last game of the season. Of course, the nature of marching bands being as they are, you cannot tell who is who very easily. But that is Julia.)Friendswood Mighty Mustang Band won Silver Medal in the State Marching Contest, November 8, 2005 in San Antonio. They were one of 21 state contestants throughout the day. They made the finals with 9 other bands and ultimately took second. It would have been nice to have the title 'Best in Texas.' But they were ranked second out of about 225 4A marching bands in the state!
Anne rode the 5 hour trip to San Antonio from Friendswood with about 50 other parents on a charter bus. Julia of course left with the band. The band spent the night in a hotel before their 'first up' prelim performance at 9:00 a.m. The winners were announced at 9:45 p.m. Anne got tired of the stands but not of the music; they were all great, top in the state.
FHS fields 180 marchers, plus about 20 alternates in addition to about 18 color guard. They use a semi-truck to haul all their equipment. By far, they have the most organized parent booster club of any other student activity at the school. The organization is amazing, the dedication, hard work and discipline of the kids is impressive. And they have a blast during the games in the stands, playing the pep tunes and dancing during sets when their part isn't up. Because of their state recognition, their coolness factor is increasing and the term 'band nerd' is actually shading toward positive. (FHS Mighty Mustang Band)
