1850s Southern Country House

When my paternal grandparents married shortly after World War I, they moved into a large country house on a hill in Southern Mississippi with my grandmother's parents. There they raised my father and uncle and I spent many childhood days crawling under, around and in it. My father figures the house was built in the 1850s -- the Illinois Central Railroad came through town about that time and not much was built in the area during the Civil War and Reconstruction.

The house passed out of the family when my grandfather died in 1969. Recent owners have modernized the kitchen and baths and the electrical, plumbing and heating/cooling systems while attempting to preserve as much of the original character as possible (at considerable expense). One of my favorite features is the expansive front and back porches.

Richard: Please e-mail me any other photos you have of the house. I am so regretful that I did not go with ya'll on what appeared to be such a joyful day. Thank you so much for posting this.
