Dawkins - "Secularist Bigot"

FIRST THINGS: A Journal of Religion, Culture, and Public Life has published a Reply to Richard Dawkins, by Anthony Flew in the December 2008 issue.

Dawkins is famous for his outspoken anti-theist position and writings. Flew is broadly known for both is own atheistic views as well as his recent abandonment of that position if favor of deism.

In his recent book, The God Delusion, Dawkins criticized Flew's conversion from atheism to deism.

Here are some highlights from Flew's reply.
  • Dawkins has "achieved some sort of record by selling more than a million copies."
  • But he fails as an academic. "But an academic attacking some ideological position that he believes to be mistaken must, of course, attack that position in its strongest form." This Dawkins fails to do.
  • Dawkins "is primarily concerned to discredit an ideological opponent by any available means." And as such, he has become "a secularist bigot."

Ouch.
